Abstract: The effects of phenytoin and its major metabolite,
5Ð(4Ðhydroxyphenyl)Ð5Ðphenylhydantoin (HPPH), on bone resorption of neonatal
mouse calvaria were examined in vitro. Both phenytoin and HPPH induced significant
bone resorption as compared to the controls after 72 h in culture. This
effect may be the cause of phenytoinÐinduced bone loss in vivo.
