The Japanese Pharmacological Society (JPS) was founded to contribute to the further advancement of pharmacology by disseminating scientific knowledge on both the theoretical and applied aspects of the discipline, and by promoting close collaboration among its members as well as with related academic societies in Japan and overseas. The decision to establish the Society was made in 1926, and the first JPS annual meeting was held in 1927. Since then, JPS has continued to support the development of pharmacological research and education through academic exchange, scientific meetings, publications, and international collaboration.
Today, JPS serves as an active forum for researchers, educators, clinicians, and industry professionals engaged in pharmacology and related fields. As of the end of December 2025, the Society had 3,666 members in Japan and overseas. Its annual meeting features a wide range of scientific presentations and provides one of the major opportunities in Japan for pharmacologists to present new findings, exchange ideas, and build collaborations. Through its annual meeting, regional meetings, seminars, and other scientific activities, JPS continues to foster a vibrant research community and to support the next generation of pharmacologists.
JPS publishes Journal of Pharmacological Sciences as its official English-language journal. The journal is an international, open access, fully electronic journal published 12 times a year and covers a broad range of experimental and clinical pharmacology. It attracts many submissions from researchers outside Japan, reflecting its role as an international platform for the dissemination of pharmacological research. JPS aims to further enhance the journal’s global visibility and accessibility, while continuing to broaden its international editorial network.
JPS also publishes Folia Pharmacologica Japonica, its official Japanese-language journal, six times a year. Together, these journals support the dissemination of pharmacological knowledge to both domestic and international audiences.
The Society is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of the President, Directors, and Auditors, who serve the Society on a part-time basis. JPS is committed to promoting diversity, strengthening international engagement, encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration, and contributing to the continued advancement of pharmacology.
About Logo
"The logo of the Japanese Pharmacological Society was created in 2002 (Heisei 14).
It was designed by Dr. Atsushi Sugiyama, an honorary member of the Society.
The design was publicly solicited through Folia Pharmacologica Japonica, Vol. 120, No. 2 (August 2002), and was finalized in December of the same year based on members’ feedback.
The logo has been featured in the journal starting from Vol. 121, No. 1 (January 2003).
Concept Behind the Logo Design
Several symbolic elements were incorporated into the logo design of the Japanese Pharmacological Society.
First, the letters “JPS” represent how the Society (S) supports research and educational activities in pharmacology (P) in Japan (J). The red letters symbolize Japanese pharmacology, while the blue letters represent the Society that supports it.
In addition, the outer frame is intentionally discontinuous on the left side, evoking the image of a drug capsule and suggesting the dissemination of research outcomes to the world.
Through this design, the intention was to visually express the role of the Society and its global impact."
